Interview with Rayan ‘rkruok’ Nathan

20 September 2009
Rayan is one of the most respected live and online players from Australia and is the subject of this player interview. Rayan was kind enough to chat with us while at this year’s WSOP.

How did you get your start in online poker?

One of my friends started playing on Pokerroom, and told me about the free rolls there. I started playing a couple of them but soon I was playing 25c-50c NL cash games. Each week I would progress up to a new level. Within a month or more I was playing $5-$10 NL but probably quite badly.

What has been your best online result?

I’ve won the Full Tilt $75 000 Guaranteed ($150 – Rebuy) and also an ipoker Fort Knox jackpot for $100 000.

What has been your best live result?

I won a $5000 event in Australia for $70 000 and cashed in the 2006 WSOP Main event for $50 000. Still looking for that big score!

Do you prefer online or live and why?

I like the convenience of playing online, sitting around in boxers watching TV whilst playing is pretty relaxing. But I do like playing big live tournaments, as you do pick up a lot more playing live and you can try and read people. Also you are only focusing on one table instead of eight or more.

You have been playing in the WSOP at the moment, can you share some interesting stories / experiences you have had?

So far unfortunately there hasn't been too much to report. I’ve played seven events and had only one small cash. However I have really enjoyed playing the PLO events. Outside of the WSOP I have just been lazy and doing plenty of eating and swimming.

What does the future hold for Rayan Nathan?

Well other than playing poker, I’ve been working on chipmeup.pokernews.com (a poker staking site) which keeps me busy. We have been working hard to push the site during the WSOP. Thankfully we have quite a few big pros who have been interested in selling a piece of themselves like Eric Seidel for example. Other than that I have some traveling planned with some poker along the way.

If any Australian players have scores or other information they would like mentioned in Wired Kangas, or would like to be interviewed, please email us at wiredkangas@gmail.com.
